The First Motorcycle "Mille Miglia" – 1949

The first edition of the "Mille Miglia" motorcycle race took place from July 23 to 25, 1949, covering a total distance of 1,935.2 km. The start was at 4:00 a.m. from Rome's Foro Italico, with 80 riders ready to compete through 17 Italian provinces. Only 43 of them managed to cross the finish line.


The race was attended by important teams representing famous motorcycle brands such as Moto Guzzi, Gilera, Sertum, Benelli, Matchless, Vespa, Lambretta, Mondial and MV

The stages of the race:

  • July 23: First stage through Lazio, Tuscany and Umbria – 668.8 km


  • July 24: Stage 2 – 635.4 km, with the first time check after the start from Rome and the passage through Civitacastellana, Terni, and Spoleto, crossing Abruzzo.



  • July 25: third and final stage – 631 km, along the roads of Lazio, Abruzzo and Campania, starting again at 4:00 am.


The first driver to return to the Foro Italico was Petrozzi, followed by Benzoni and Fornasari of the winning Sertum team.

The winners

The overall team classification saw a tie:

  • SERTUM (Fornasari, Benzoni, Ventura)
  • PIAGGIO B (Spadoni, Romano, Fassora)
  • INNOCENTI B (Angonoa, Magri, Brunori)



However, both Piaggio and Innocenti were excluded from the final standings for irregularities. The Corriere dello Sport Trophy was therefore awarded to SERTUM, which officially took the victory.
